I got into an argument with a friend of mine today. It was about the term “Spanish”. Because apparently where he comes from people are called Spanish if they speak Spanish. And where I come from I call people Spanish if they come from Spain.
It has intrigued me a bit. The topic of it. The usage of terms, one might say. Is “Spanish” a race? Or are you Spanish (or Spaniard) just as people who come from Sweden are called Swedish (or Swedes)?
It’s confusing. Theoretically if you are from Argentina you are still called Argentinian, or Spanish Argentinian (if you have Spanish ancestors), right? But upon reading a little bit about it, it seems that people from North America call people Spanish if they speak Spanish.
Which is confusing to me. Not everybody who speaks English is called English, so why is it so with Spanish?
Over all, I regret the argument. But I guess it does happen when people see or know things in a different way.
